Principle One / One Space

The Center, 99 Queen's Road Central, Hong Kong, 2005

This shared office space caters for a mixed team of professionals from widely varying disciplines, from interior design and space planning, to technology design, IT support and sales. The result is as much in response to these unusual working relationships as it is to the characteristics of the site itself.

Located on the 56th floor of a prominent Central District building, the corner tenancy boasts spectacular views over Victoria Harbour and Kowloon.

The design response establishes a single, open-office area at the apex of the space, exploiting the light, views and rational composition it affords. The unity and functional clarity of this highly-productive workplace is played off a strikingly expansive, boldly coloured, high-gloss lacquer wall, whose sinuous curves disguise the remaining irregularities.

As this client serves investment banks and hedge funds, the workspace here simulates a trading floor, composed of ranks of 9m-long, unbroken tabletops, custom-designed to provide an economical, yet fully integrated and IT-rich desktop. Structural cantilevers permit work positions without arbitrary boundaries, catering for flexible reconfigurations of headcount and groupings, while concealing the services that support them.
